Trevannock is my alternate history novel: the transatlantic slave trade, reversed.
For many years, I have worked in software quality assurance, mostly in banking and financial services.
The work teaches you to look for the point where a system stops doing what its designers intended. You follow a process, test its assumptions, and ask what happens when the pieces that look sound on their own meet the real world.
That habit stayed with me while writing *Trevannock*.
*Trevannock* is an alternate-history novel, and *Crossing-Kin* Book One of five. It asks what changes when power, conquest and the transatlantic slave trade are viewed from the other side of history.
The story follows Elias Hollowell, a fisherman from the Cornish village of Trevannock, after the Adunbi Imperium reaches Cornwall. It is a story about systems of control, but also about what those systems cannot fully contain: memory, language, family, belonging and the stubborn fact of home.
The historical material is difficult. The novel contains themes of enslavement and colonial violence. I did not want those realities to become distant abstractions. The administrative machinery matters: the records, classifications and decisions that make harm feel routine to those carrying them out.
That is partly why quality assurance has shaped the way I write. A system is never only its headline purpose. It is also the rules it creates, the information it preserves, the people it excludes and the failures it quietly makes possible.
Writing *Trevannock* meant thinking about those questions through character and place. Cornwall is not simply a backdrop. Neither are Port Ojo, Ferran’s Reach or the Black Water. Each becomes part of the moral geography of a world changed by conquest.
The wider *Crossing-Kin* sequence continues with *Black Water*, *Ferran’s Reach*, *Awakening* and *Reckoning*. All five books are drafted.
*Trevannock* was published on 30 May 2026 by Trevannock Press. It is available in paperback, hardcover, ebook and audiobook.
